Moving Checklist

We want your home buying experience to be as enjoyable as possible. To help you achieve that, we have compiled the following moving checklist to help with your move.

9-10 Weeks Before Move

  • Whether buying a home that is already completed or being part of the building process, Payant Homes will be in contact with you as to when your move-in date is scheduled. Payant Homes will also be in constant contact with you throughout the entire building process.
  • Keep all of your moving paperwork in one place; for example a binder or folder. This will be handy during your move as well as at tax time!
  • If you’re new to the area, start getting to know your new community. You may want to inquire about the following:
    • Local utility company
    • Schools & day care establishments
    • Accessibility to hospitals, fire station and police station
    • Health facilities
    • Banks
    • Places of worship
    • Shopping establishments
    • Internet service providers
    • Storage facilities
    • Doctors, dentists, pharmacies
    • Veterinarians
    • Snow removal services
  • Take inventory of your possessions. Document with photos and record serial numbers when applicable. This will be your “inventory sheet” which you can use to make sure that all of your possessions arrived in good order as you are unpacking. This is also helpful for insurance purposes.

7-8 Weeks Before Move

  • Sort through your belongings to determine items you plan to get rid of.  Have a garage sale or ask a local charity to pick up the items.
  • Establish a budget for moving expenses and start getting estimates from moving companies or moving vans.
  • Arrange to have any pertinent school or day care records transferred to your new community.  Be sure to check school schedules and enrollment requirements.
  • Contact your insurance agent(s) to transfer your policies (health, fire, dental, homeowners, life, and automobile) and inquire about any changes that may adjust your policies. Also, verify that moving is covered in your policy – if not, invest in movers’ insurance.

4-5 Weeks Before Move

  • If you’re moving a long distance, make as many of your travel arrangements (flights, hotels, car rentals, etc.) as possible.
  • Start cleaning out the freezer.  Eat or discard frozen foods or foods that are perishable.
  • Obtain a Change-of-Address kit from your Post Office and start making a list of people and businesses to notify of your move, including family, friends, health care providers, banks, and business associates.
  • Choose the moving company or van company that best accommodates your needs and confirm moving dates.
  • Stock up on packing supplies (boxes, tape, labels, markers, newspapers,
bubble-wrap and any other item that you think you might need.)  When
labeling your boxes, note the contents inside the box, whether they are fragile and the room in which they belong.

2-3 Weeks Before Move

  • Look into services you will need at your new home such as:  newspaper delivery, cable, electric, gas, telephone, water, garbage collection, internet services, etc. Some of these services may be able to be transferred and others will need to be disconnected and reconnected.

Home Sweet Home

  • When unpacking, go through and check your belongings against the inventory sheet you created prior to the move.
  • Review the Homeowner Manual we provided for you; it contains detailed information about your new Payant home and warranty.
  • Enjoy your new Payant home!
